26 bekroonde foto's tonen hoe wij omgaan met de natuur: goed en slecht

De winnende foto’s van de derde editie van de Nature and Humans Photo Competition tonen twee heel verschillende maar even belangrijke aspecten van niet-menselijke dieren.

Aan de ene kant laat de fotowedstrijd, die natuurbeschermingsfotografie en aanverwante initiatieven viert, zien hoe mensen op een ongelooflijk negatieve manier met dieren omgaan, onder meer via controversiële veeteeltpraktijken. Aan de andere kant viert de wedstrijd prachtige natuurfoto’s en wildlife-foto’s die dieren op hun best laten zien.

“In de drie ‘Nature and Humans’ natuurbeschermingscategorieën hebben we krachtige en originele foto’s beloond die de relatie — positief of negatief — tussen de natuurlijke omgeving en ons, mensen, onderzoeken,” legt de competitie uit. “Zowel hoopvolle als verontrustende beelden kregen een prijs, allemaal met een duidelijke boodschap voor natuurbescherming.”

In andere categorieën worden beelden juist meer gewaardeerd om schoonheid en visuele impact, wat volgens de organisatoren van Fundación DESEA ook aanzienlijk bijdraagt aan natuurbescherming van natuur en wilde dieren.

“Wij geloven dat de beste manier om de wil tot het beschermen van de Natuur te inspireren, is door haar verbluffende schoonheid,” legt de Nature and Humans Photo Competition uit.

Fotografen uit 49 verschillende landen en regio’s deden mee aan de competitie, en Spaanse natuurfotograaf Arturo de Frías leidde de competitie en de jury. Naast de onderstaande category-winnende beelden werden ook runner-ups en finalisten genoemd in alle categorieën. Alle andere bekroonde foto’s zijn online te bekijken.

Conservation Photography — Thematic Series

Fotograaf human.cruelties, die zichzelf omschrijft als dierenrechtenonderzoeker, won deze categorie voor zijn/haar serie, “Uncovering what’s hidden.” De fotograaf ontving een prijs van €1.500.

Fotograaf Francisco Negroni nam de topplaats in deze categorie voor de foto, “Screaming in the wind.”

In deze laatste categorie werden belangrijke natuurbeschermingswerken in Spanje gevierd. Javier Murcia behaalde de eerste plek met “I want my soda,” een krachtige foto die de gevaren van oceaanvervuiling weerspiegelt.

De serie van fotografe Louise Jorgensen, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind,” won de eerste prijs. Jorgensen, net als de andere winnaars hierboven, verdiende €1.500 voor haar overwinning.

The Beauty of the Planet

De foto van Daniel Valverde, “Shaking Off While Eating,” toont een grijze beer die een enorme plens water schudt terwijl hij een vis in zijn poot vasthoudt. Valverde ontving een voucher ter waarde van €1.000 voor een van Wildwatching Spain’s internationale fotoreizen.

Valverde won deze categorie ook, met zijn foto, “Power Struggle.” Dit leverde de fotograaf nog een voucher van €500 op.

Mammals

Hira Punjabi’s fantastische portret van een vleermuis, “Bat Bath,” won de Mammals-categorie. Punjabi won een Sony-imaging-kit ter waarde van €1.700.

Birds

De fantastische foto van Andrea Izzotti, “Cormorhunt,” leverde de fotograaf een voucher van €500 bij Fotografiarte, een van Spanje’s toonaangevende fotowinkels.

Oceans

“Ghost of the Kelp Forest” van Lesley Rochat won de fotowedstrijd in de Oceans-categorie, plus een OM-5 Mark II-kit met een OM System 12-45mm zoomlens.

Other Animals

Lalith Ekanayake’s “Master of Disguise” is een opvallende foto van een zeer goed gecamoufleerde gecko.

Javier Herranz’s schitterende zwart-wit landschapsschoot, “Flysch,” won de hoofdprijs.

“Wings of Ghost” van fotograaf Lalith Ekanayake won de Creatieve categorie, waar fotografen het onderling opnemen tegen beelden die zijn vastgelegd met creatieve en experimentele technieken.

Een nog jongere fotograaf, Alberto Román Gómez, won de kindercategorie met “A break at 40°C.”
